"Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only a few things are necessary, really only one, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her." (Luke 10:41,32)
Dear Ladies,
Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you all enjoyed a warm and blessed time with your families this weekend. When you look at this picture of a grand thanksgiving feast, what sentiment immediately comes to mind? Do you find your mouth watering, or like me, do you find yourself thinking, "Wow, that would be a lot of work!"
The Lord convicted me recently that I do indeed suffer from "Martha syndrome", getting so absorbed in barreling through my daily "to-do" list that I often don't stop to truly consider the Lord and just listen to Him. At first this seemed like a harmless by-product of being busy, but it wasn't long before trying to do everything in my own strength took it's toll on me and I found myself run down, stressed out, and even physicallly sick.
As we gear up for the busy holiday season, my prayer for us all is that we can take a deep breath, stop all of our crazy activity and just sit at the Lord's feet and listen to Him. Until we can get into the Lord's stride, all of our striving is pointless and will amount to nothing in the end except wasted effort and unnecessary stress. Yes, it's true that as believers in Jesus Christ, we are called to be ministers and laborers, but let us not labor and toil in vain, but rather in His strength and by His Spirit.
What was Mary's "good part"? She stopped and listened to the Lord, placing herself automatically where the Lord wanted her to be. How simple and uncomplicated. Let us all stop and listen today. Amen.
